A record of a few things I see / hear / watch / do.

NewDad (supported by Highschool) @ Heaven – I’ve been slightly obsessed with NewDad for a little bit now, so jumped at the chance to see them when they came to London. With ethereal, grungy 90s vibes and a cool af front-woman – what’s not to love? My fave song/video at the moment is ‘I Don’t Recognise You’ – which is as much for it’s delicious sound as for the fact it features the my sister’s pink DVD/TV combo that I coveted for years as a young teen. The support act, Highschool held their own at the gig too with sounds that give me Leeds vibes circa 2007.

Thundercat @ Brixton – Sure, the view from 5”2 wasn’t the best – but it was well worth going. A musician who eats, sleeps and breathes music, he smashed it in true style.

The Big Design ChallengeAs someone who’s not the most hands-on person, watching this was totally mind-blowing. The purpose of the programme is to find the UK’s biggest design superstar with a series of challenges. Hosted by Lauren Laverne and featuring design legends Morag Myerscough and Tej Chauhen, it’s super inspiring and well worth a watch.

Last Night in Soho — Bit of a bloody disappointment (‘scuse the pun)! 💔 Edgar Wright is one of my favourite directors of all time so I was SUPER excited to see this, but alas… The acting was a bit stunted and the story wasn’t great (although did enjoy the plot twist towards the end). A few nice bits of camera trickery throughout though. Enjoyed this breakdown Edgar Wright did of his favourite scenes from his films for Vanity Fair more! Love the Cornetto Trilogy and have seen Shaun Of The Dead approximately a gazillion times, so any more stories/info about it is always welcome.

Yellowjackets — Really refreshing to see middle aged women in Hollywood at the centre of an amazing story. Complex characters that aren’t particularly likeable, but definitely watchable. And who can say no to anything starring both Christina Ricci and Juliette Lewis?!

This Is Going To Hurt — Read the book a few years ago and very much enjoyed. LOVE Ben Whishaw. So I was excited for this and thankfully I wasn’t disappointed. The writers developed a really interesting narrative (as the book’s essentially a series of diary entries) and really took time to create rounded characters all with their own interesting back stories. Seriously bloody funny and totes emoshe. Shame the NHS is even more underfunded now than when it was written. 🥺

Vanishing Point: Interiors — Part of the London International Mime Festival. This one was reeeeeally interesting. Not something I would ordinarily choose to go and see, but I got free tickets from a friend. And I was pleasantly surprised! The audience is essentially a voyeur, looking in through a window at a dinner party. Incredible to see just how much story can be conveyed with basically just physical acting and a little bit of sound design!

Dune — Zendaya and Timothee star in the dystopian remake. Enjoyed on the most-part, even if it was rrrrrather slow.

Paul McCarntney: Inside the Songs — Love learning about this kind of thing… back stories and interesting tidbits about his most famous songs in bitesize episodes. A beautiful little insight into the genius songwriter.

The White Lotus — Chaotic, bizarre and hilarious with an amazing (yet anxiety inducing) score.

The Power Of The Dog — Super slow yet intense, I enjoyed! Especially Kirsten Dunst’s portrayal of a woman sent spiralling into alcoholism due to the abusive behaviour she suffers at the hands of her new husband’s brother.

The French Dispatch — Bit disappointing tbh. Beautiful as ever… but Wes needs to get back to thinking story first, rather than thinking how he can cram in all the famous cameos. Left it feeling a little disjointed. A few good performances though… as ever Timithee Chalamet was a delight.

Don’t Look Up — It was okkk… Certainly not the sensation everyone raves about! Although perhaps it’s just an important film to draw everyone’s attention a bit more to the climate crisis we’re hurtling towards. Very much enjoyed these convos with Adam McKay on the film though.
